Saints too strong for battling Lawmen

WITH 16 goals for and none against from their last three games, TNS were expected to progress to the next stage with ease against Cymru Alliance high-flyers Lex.
They duly obliged and had the game wrapped up with a 3-0 lead by the break.
It could have been different if Gerard Doherty had failed to save an early strike from Gary Penlington after a wayward pass from Tommy Holmes.
But Scott Ruscoe put the Saints ahead inside seven minutes with a 25-yard strike into the bottom corner, before Michael Wilde grabbed a brace.
On the quarter-hour, Ruscoe's cross was miscued by Nicky Ward but Wilde made no mistake from 10 yards out.
Barry Hogan's pass found Marc Lloyd Williams who put Wilde in again in the 41st minute and a difficult second-half looked on the cards for the Lawmen, but the expected rout failed to materialise thanks to some dogged defending.
Wilde’s quest for a hat-trick had already been frustrated by the woodwork and Lex keeper Gavin Pierce saved his spot kick magnificently after he had been brought down by Gavin Maloney.
Chris King was forced to head off the line for TNS after Lex forced a series a corners, but something had to give at the other end.
Eventually sub John Toner worked the opening down the by-line to cross for Lloyd Williams to net from close range.
But the Wrexham outfit will take comfort that they lost by a smaller scoreline than Aberystwyth, Airbus and Cefn Druids in the Saints’ previous three matches.
