TNS crash as Belle tolls

SAINTS saw their cup hopes dashed for a second time in four days as they were beaten by a fifth minute goal from Llanelli’s Cortez Belle.
And TNS could have few complaints with keeper Gerard Doherty performing heroics to keep the Reds’ attack at bay.
A mis-placed square ball from Nicky Ward led to the goal when Belle fed Antonio Corbisiero on the left. His shot was parried by Doherty and the lanky frontman followed up to score.
Minutes later Craig Williams was only denied by a great Doherty save and Ivan Nofuentes headed just wide in a torrid opening period.
Saints’ first real opening on 20 minutes was squandered by Barry Hogan who lobbed over keeper Duncan Roberts and the crossbar, while Michael Wilde was wide as he slid in to meet a Graham Evans cross.
Lacking penetration where it mattered, TNS were caught by several quick Llanelli breaks and, within seconds of the restart, Michael Jackson was forced to head off the line from Belle, while Jamie Rewberry narrowly missed the target with a header.
Belle then put in Jacob Mingorance, but Doherty somehow clawed the Spaniard’s effort away to safety.
TNS pushed Steve Evans up front as they desperately sought an equaliser but his best effort went wide when a cross looked a better option, while Reds’ keeper Duncan Roberts saved well from Scott Ruscoe’s 20-yard drive.
Saints also had claims for a penalty waved away when Graham Evans was felled in the box, but the best chance to level fell to sub John Toner who somehow failed to find the target when be broke through one-on-one with Roberts.
It would have been rough justice on Llanelli who deserved to take a place in the last eight against a TNS side who may have been leg weary from their exertions at Wrexham, but never captured their normal form.
