Ward nets the points
SAINTS had scored 11 goals without reply on their previous two league visits to The Airfield, but found the going tougher in this opening game of the season.
They needed an 83rd minute goal from Nicky Ward to take the spoils against the resilient Wingmakers who fought every inch of the way.
Youth pro Mark Davies slotted into the left back position normally occupied by the injured Chris King and never looked out of place, while Carter posed a constant threat up front.
The hosts only dangerous attack of the night came as early as the seventh minute when Ryan Maloney brought a good save from Gerard Doherty.
Mike Wilde fired over in the 12th minute after being put in by Scott Ruscoe, who then skimmed the crossbar with a header after Carter had beaten his man down the right.
Ward and John Leah both had efforts go wide before Ruscoe had the best chance of the night just before the break, but with only Adam McGhee to beat he fired straight at the keeper.
Ward saw his intended cross hit the far post with McGhee stranded and Leah was unlucky to see his diving header from a Carter cross also rattle the woodwork.
A superb chase down the left saw Davies cross, but Ward missed the target before gaining some compensation with seven minutes left when his shot from 20 yards deflected off Carter to finally defeat McGhee.
