Llanelli knock Saints off top spot

BOTH managers played down the significance of this top-of-the-table result in which pretenders Llanelli put down a serious marker to take over the The New Saints’ crown.
The Reds took over at the top as the previous leaders and reigning champions were beaten 2-0, their first home defeat at Treflan in 42 outings.
Llanelli manager Peter Nicholas was delighted with the outcome but felt TNS were still the title favourites. "There is still a long way to go and we had to play very well to win the game," he said.
The Saints hardly helped their own cause with the 31st minute dismissal of Scott Ruscoe who kicked out after being fouled by Antonio Corbisiero. But Nicholas said: "Obviously the sending off was quite crucial, but sometimes it can work for you and sometimes against you and today it worked in our favour."
The visitors took the game to their hosts and almost took the lead on 15 minutes when a Rhys Griffiths header from Lee Phillips corner hit the underside of the bar and was cleared off the line by Ruscoe into the arms of keeper Gerard Doherty. Llanelli appealed for a goal, but TV replays later showed the ball had bounced down onto the line.
Craig Williams also went close with a shot beaten away for a corner as TNS struggled to get into gear and they had to wait until the 41st minute before threatening the visitors’ goal, Alfie Carter firing wide.
The defining moment of the game arrived on the stroke of half-time when Llanelli failed to clear and keeper Duncan Roberts pulled off a superb double save to deny Nicky Ward and John Toner, whose shot hit Roberts’ legs before rebounding to safety off the crossbar.
Within 13 minutes of the restart, Llanelli were two goals to the good, Cortez Belle providing the cross for an unmarked Rhys Griffiths to head his 12th league goal of the campaign.
Three minutes later, Jacob Mingorance shrugged off the challenge of Phil Baker to fire past Doherty from 10 yards.
Ironically, TNS proved more of a threat with 10 men, Carter forcing a diving save from Roberts just after the break and Baker heading wide at the near post.
Sub John Leah hit the crossbar with a 20 yarder in the closing moments, but the three points were already on their way to South Wales.
"Before they scored we had two good chances but you’ve got to put them away," said TNS boss Ken McKenna.
"They exploited the 10 men well and deserved their win in the end."
