TNS title challenge back on track

THE Saints got their Welsh Premier title challenge back on track with a clinical display of controlled football to see off rivals Rhyl 2-0.
Ken McKenna's men put two stuttering displays behind them as they controlled the majority of the possession and denied the Lilywhites virtually any scoring opportunities.
A win looked on the cards as early as the third minute, when Tommy Holmes squared Phil Baker's throw-in to John Leah, who was left unchallenged to power a 25-yard curling shot out of the reach of keeper John Gann.
With TNS dominating, Rhyl did almost snatch an equaliser on the half-hour when Carl Clampitt's 20-yard shot hit Michael Jackson and deflected onto the bar.
But the Saints continued to look more threatening and should have had more to show from their first-half display, with Michael Wilde firing over from a good position and also denied a strong penalty claim when felled in the box by George Horan.
Rhyl showed more purpose on the restart but were unable to test keeper Gerard Doherty, and Wilde saw his header cleared off the line by Andy Moran.
But a second goal arrived in the 72nd minute when Horan fouled Martyn Naylor, whose inch-perfect free-kick found Jackson, who powered his header into the far corner to spark some gleeful celebrations.
Sub Nicky Ward twice found himself one-on-one with Gann in the closing stages, but the keeper did well to save on both occasions and send the Lillies home with a more respectable scoreline than they probably deserved.
