Penalties end Saints' cup interest
PORTHMADOG'S Mike Foster kept his cool in a penalty shoot-out drama to kick Saints out of the Welsh Cup.
THey had twice fought back to level in the first 90 minutes against a TNS side shorn of nine players through injury, illness or unavailability.
Manager Ken McKenna was forced to hand a debut to reserve team striker Nathan Prodger, but his side went in front on 27 minutes when Greg Stones cut free down the left and crossed to the unmarked John Toner, who picked his spot from the edge of the box to fire past keeper Richard Harvey.
Chris King could have added to the lead, but was denied at the near post by Harvey and the home team were back on level terms within five minutes, thanks to central defender Ryan Davies, who used his head to turn in Foster's curling free-kick.
JUst before half time, Saints regained the lead courtesy of Stones, who seized on Prodger's knock down from a Jamie Wood cross to direct a 12-yard drive into the net.
Porthmadog went close several times with Michael Jackson just rescuing his lines from Marcus Orlik after Phil Baker had allowed a clearance to loop over his head. But it was only temporary relief as, with eight minutes remaining, Davies headed home his second from Gareth Parry's right wing corner.
TNS had plenty of chances in extra-time and Wood almost grabbed the crucial goal when he beat Harvey to the ball only to see his effort trickle past a post.
And when Carl Owen broke free near the end of the extra period he was hauled back by Jackson who was sent off by referee Huw Jones.
With penalties looming, McKenna brought on veteran keeper and penalty expert Lee Williams in an outfield role, but the move failed to pay off. After Toner's spot kick was saved and Baker spooned his high and wide, Williams fired down the middle straight at Harvey.
POrt's first two efforts were also unsuccessful but Owen, Orlik and Foster hit the target to end Saints' interest in the cup.
