Naylor's winner is just reward
MARTYN Naylor's 57th-minute winner gave The New Saints a 2-1 success at Caersws, but the narrow margin of victory barely reflected the visitors' almost total domination.
The Bluebirds' only notable effort on goal was a penalty from Graham Evans after John Leah was somewhat harshly adjudged to have brought down Sion Meredith in the box.
Football was always difficult on a pitch with the consistency of Christmas pudding, but early play saw Carl Lamb go close on three occasions. He was just wide with an 18-yarder after a defensive slip and then saw a six-yard effort well saved by home keeper Andy Mulliner.
John Toner headed narrowly wide past the far post and Chris King also missed the target.
But the Saints were rewarded for pressure on the half hour when Caersws could only clear Naylor's corner as far as Duane Courtney, who hammered the opener from the edge of the box.
Lamb's lobbed effort and another from Courtney both went over the bar before the break but, with TNS in control, Evans' spot kick sent keeper Paul Harrison the wrong way and gave the hosts a toehold in the game.
It lasted just four minutes as Mulliner failed to come for a Chris King cross and Naylor made no mistake with his diving header.
The Bluebirds staged a late rally but were never able to trouble Harrison and after Luke Holden had gone close with a curling 18-yarder, only the woodwork and then a superb save from Mulliner prevented Toner from giving the scoreline a more accurate reflection of the balance of play.
