McKenna rues away goals defeat

FIREWORKS greeted both sides onto the pitch in the Baltic seaport of Ventspils, but the TNS challenge turned out to be a damp squib as they tumbled out of the Champions League.
Two headed goals frpm Jean-Paul Ndeki and Denis Kacanovs left TNS to rue their defensive errors at Newtown, as they battled to a 4-4 aggregate draw only to lose on away goals.
"I am disappointed with the players, they have not given it their best shot. I do not think they believed in it, the game was there to be won, I really can't explain it," said downcast manager Ken McKenna.
TNS failed to pose a real attacking threat throughout the game and were often guilty of over-elaborating their passing on a rain-sodden pitch where control was always difficult.
But despite surrendering two goals from corners, the Saints hit back late on after Martyn Naylor's injury-time free-kick levelled the tie. And if Ronnie Morgan's 22-yard rocket in the 73rd-minute had not hit the inside of a post, the outcome could well have been different.
The first goal arrived on 20 minutes when Cameronian centre-back Jean-Paul Ndeki rose highest at a corner from Zurab Menteshashvili to head into the far corner. Vits Rimkus was guilty of a glaring miss and Sergei Senecky twice miscued as Saints survived several more scares.
Their best chance of the first-half came in the 42nd-minute from a Chris King free-kick on the right, with Duane Courtney's goal-bound header turned over the bar one-handed by keeper Pavels Davidovs.
But eight minutes into the second half, TNS conceded again from a Mihail Zizilevs inswinging corner which was headed home by Denis Kocanovs.
The introduction of subs Alfie Carter, Ronnie Morgan and Naylor improved the Saints as an attacking force and it was Carter who set-up fellow sub Morgan for the shot that hit the upright.
But the Saints laboured to make a breakthrough and had to wait until the second minute of injury time for a consolation goal, when Naylor's stunning 22-yard set piece curled inside the post to finally beat Davidovs.
McKenna says he is tired of talking about the lack of competitive preparation for his side but could not ignore its effect.
"It's the same argument every year and everyone says it's McKenna making excuses," he added, "I have been saying the same for the last seven years.
"There were only two or three players who performed to their ability, it could be because we are in pre-season. I'm getting bored of saying it to be honest.
"I am disappointed to go out on away goals, I can't believe we find ourselves scoring four goals and have still gone out."
