Saints robbed in smash and grab raid

THE New Saints came away from Connah's Quay the victims of a classic smash and grab raid.
After being robbed of a perfectly good goal in the first-half, they surrendered to a sucker punch on 69 minutes, when Mike Hayes took full advantage of a slip by defender Steve Evans to race into the box before planting his shot past keeper Paul Harrison via the inside of the far post.
TNS dominated the bulk of possession and Danny Holmes was inches wide with an early 30-yarder, while Aeron Edwards fired straight at keeper Terry McCormick.
And the visitors appeared to have a perfectly good goal disallowed on the quarter hour when Chris Seargeant's shot was helped into his own net by the keeper, only for a linesman's flag to rule that the incoming Craig Jones, who did not touch the ball, was offside.
Holmes could have been awarded a penalty after being felled in the box, while the Nomads' only serious first-half effort was a 20-yarder from Stuart Scheuber that sailed over the bar.
The home goal led a charmed life on a couple of occasions after the break, with McCormick saving from Steve Abbott after Seargeant's cross found Jones.
Aaron Burns fired straight at Paul Harrison from outside the box after being put through by Jamie Petrie, while Scott Ruscoe was wide of the target at the other end from Seargeant's left-wing cross.
An Edwards effort was deflected for a corner from which McCormick knew little about an Abbott close range shot that hit him in the chest before being cleared to safety.
After conceding the goal, the Saints were lucky not to fall further behind, Harrison producing a diving save from Burns.
New signing Chris Sharp made his debut from the bench with 20 minutes to go, but had little chance to make an impact, with Ruscoe heading wide from a Jones cross as TNS searched in vain for the equaliser.
