Saints frustrated at The Airfield
THE New Saints endured a night of frustration at The Airfield as they were held to a goal-less draw by Airbus UK Broughton. Both sides had chances to take the lead in the first-half with the Wingmakers claiming the ball had crossed the line after Rhys Roberts headed against the crossbar from a Geo Feliciello free-kick. But Tommy Holmes fired against the bar on the half-hour for the Saints after a good exchange of passes with Chris Sharp. Craig Jones had an early chance to fire the Saints in front, but saw his shot saved by keeper Kristian Rogers after Sharp had headed the ball on. Feliciello fired wide at the other end from a Wingmakers' attack, with Rogers saving at the feet of the onrushing Scott Ruscoe. The Saints upped the tempo after the break and laid siege to the home goal, with the best chance to break the deadlock falling to former Wingmaker Jones, who fired over the target after being released by Sharp with only Rogers to beat. Matthew Berkeley was denied by the keeper, with Steve Evans heading wide from a Craig Williams free-kick. It took a superb save from Rogers to deny Sharp, while sub Alex Darlington fired well over the target from 20 yards. Jones headed over from a Tommy Holmes cross and Evans was just wide with a 30-yarder, but the Airbus rearguard held out to dent the Saints' title ambitions. |
