WELSH CUP / 4th Round
TNS STUTTER PAST GWYNFI
BOSS Ken McKenna reflected on the Welsh Cup quarter final assignment at Barry Town and purred "We can beat them."
Speaking after a 1-0 fourth round win at CC Sports Welsh League side Gwynfi United, McKenna is already looking forward to the March 9 clash where TNS will bid to reap revenge for last season's Welsh Cup Final defeat.
"It is a tough draw but an exciting one," said McKenna.
"We haven't got a great record against Barry Town so I'd say it's time to beat them.
"There are no easy ties at this stage but we are looking forward to the Barry Town game as it will show us how far the team has progressed.
"Barry Town is a great club and one that deserve respect having raised the standards of the league. But I fully believe we can beat them."
The Saints however made heavy weather of their CC Sports Welsh League hosts and an extra time goal from John Toner proved decisive.
Gwynfi showed their determination to cause an upset early on with Scott Connolly firing several warnings that were dealt with by Gerard Doherty.
TNS however soon found their rhythm and attacked with purpose with the bustling Justin Perry and skilful Nicky Ward proving a threat.
Ward - in fine form since being switched further forward - brought Gwynfi keeper Huw Little into action with an 18-yard drive on 20 minutes.
But the Welsh League hosts defended bravely despite the constant pressing from the Saints and should have taken the lead on half-time.
Young Irishman Doherty failed to hold a Scott Connolly shot with the rebound falling for Dale Price who ballooned wide of a gaping target.
Stirred, the 1996 Welsh Cup winners finally started to impose themselves after the break but despite the introduction of giant Steve Anthrobus and TNS ace Toner, Gwynfi held firm until the death.
Under largely unpopular rules of the competition the tie had to be completed on the day with TNS's far superior fitness levels coming to the fore in extra time.
Toner eventually scored the decisive goal as a well-delivered centre from the left wing by Robbie Wood was crashed home on the far post.
McKenna conceded: "Gwynfi were a well-organised side but I am just happy to have won following what I felt was a very poor performance."
