REF TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS SAINTS GRAB DRAW

REFEREE Phil Southall was at the centre of two incidents, as Saints came back to snatch a draw at Inter Cable Tel.
A controversial 88th minute penalty stopped the Cardiff outfit from gaining their seventh win in eight outings.
Inter had taken an 83rd minute lead after being awarded a debatable throw-in, when Andy Mulliner's clearance flew into touch off a home striker.
While Saints appealed against the decision, Inter quickly took the throw with Neil Davies heading against the upright before Paul Burrows slotted home the rebound.
Inter seemed to have the game sewn up moments later, when sub Nathan Johnson broke through to 'score', only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Following Tommy Morgan's by-line cross, central defender Andrew Rickard was adjudged to have handled the ball and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which Adie Jones slotted away.
Inter's manager George Woods was furious after the game and made an unprecedented attack on the man in the middle.
"The referee was diabolical and inconsistent," he said. "Something has to be done to improve the standards of refereeing."
Rickard claimed the ball hit him on the club badge, not his hand, but referee Southall was adamant.
"I was five yards away when the player moved his hand to the ball. He misjudged the bounce and from five yards away you are not going to get it wrong," he said.
