A TIGHT, hard fought game ended with Newport winning by the only goal of the game courtesy of Richard French after just 18 mins, despite TNS's wholehearted efforts in the second half.
After a cautious beginning, John Toner had the first real chance when a poor backpass almost let him in, but 'keeper Mountain saved well. Soon after French scored the only goal of the game when TNS failed to clear and French fired home from 12 yards to give the County fans something to cheer about.
French could have added to the score a minute later but couldn't get his shot on target.
TNS then had the best chance of the half when from a corner, Mountain blocked Toner's shot at point blank range, and Perry fired the rebound wide of the post, when it looked easier to at least hit the target.
That was the last real action of the half, but the home started the second 45 minutes the better team, with Nathan Davies hitting the cross bar just three minutes after the restart with a spectacular drive from 35 yards.
As the half wore on, the more possession TNS had, but despite all their efforts they diddn't really trouble the home keeper, Mountain. There were plenty of long throws, which the home defence struggled to clear as the game came to an end, but probably Newport just about deserved the three points.
