ANTHROBUS BRACE SINKS COUNTY
NEWPORT County suffered their first defeat in the group stages of the FAW Premier Cup at the hands of Welsh Premier Leaders TNS. At the Recreation Ground, Newport had a bright start with Gary Shephard and Mike Fowler having shots in the early minutes but it was the home side that drew first blood when a neatly taken free kick by Martin Naylor saw Chris King latch on to it and the ball ended up in the back of the net courtesy of Matt Rose's headed clearance. Newport created plenty of half chances without really threatening, although Gary Shepherd went close twice. In the 44th minute, there was controversy as Billy Clark fouled Justin Perry and the official referee decided that he was not the last man and only booked him. Two goals in three minutes midway through the second half decided the game with substitute Steve Anthrobus scoring them both. The first came when some fine interplay saw Ruscoe free to cross for Anthrobus to slot home from 6 yards, and he claimed the second when Evans flicked on Gary Brabin’s in-swinging corner for an easy chance. |
