BATTLING SAINTS STUN TOP DOGS
SAINTS kept their Konica League Cup hopes alive after earning a 1-1 draw in the quarter final at favourites Bangor City. The Saints were rewarded for a stirring display and came close to taking a first leg lead back to Powys when Simon Abercrombie was foiled by a superb save from Bangor's player boss Nigel Adkins late on. With the hosts pushing forward, substitute Mark Baker broke clear and crossed for the winger whose headed effort was blocked at the far post. Bangor, who enjoyed a 12-goal romp against Maesteg Park in their last outing, were stunned after just 11 minutes when Tony Henry sent a looping header over Adkins from Abercrombie's corner. The villagers often looked menacing in the early stages with John Whelan driving a shot over the bar while Abercrombie's goalbound effort was deflected into the side netting by Mark Rutter. Bangor stepped up the pressure after the break and should have levelled on the hour after being awarded a penalty but the impressive Andy Mulliner was equal to Mark Rutter's spot kick. The North Walians, however, were not to be denied and equalised 17 minutes from time through a dipping effort from Marc Lloyd Williams. |
