Troubles mounting for Saints
1993 was by far the best year in Llansantffraid’s history, but 1994 looks like being an entirely different story.
Their shock defeat at the hands of rock bottom Mold has condemned the Saints to the relegation dogfight in their first season in the Konica League of Wales.
Six defeats in the last seven games has seen them plunge down the table, and points have become as rare as dry days.
The village club's meteoric rise from relative obscurity has turned into a nightmare, and after a bright start to the season the Saints are now in real trouble.
Anything could have happened in the Mold mud-bath, with both managers describing the game as a lottery. But in a goalless first-half Mold should have scored four.
New keeper Ian Hughes covered himself in both mud and glory as the North Walians made the better use of the ball, and only a combination of bad finishing and brave goalkeeping kept the score-sheet blank.
Llansantffraid had their moments, too, with Billy Morris twice sending the ball across the face of the Mold goal.
Hughes opened the second-half with a brilliant top corner save, and followed it up with another super save as Llansantffraid’s defensive wall split, to allow a free-kick straight through.
But the Saints began to improve and were rewarded when a double substitution in the 69th minute produced immediate results.
Andy Edwards headed the ball down, and ex-Telford man Carlton Miller, with his first touch, swept it into the net.
Two minutes later Mold were level when Stuart Rain converted a penalty after being pulled down by Alan Morris. And it was Rain who got the winner 10 minutes from time when a sliced clearance by Jason Weetman fell into the striker’s path.
Llansantffraid produced their best moments in the closing minutes when Mold twice cleared the ball off the line, and only the outstretched of goalkeeper Jeff Livens denied Morris an injury time equaliser.
