Connah's Quay Nomads
Clarke’s heroes beat the drop
SEVEN points from their last three games saw Llansantfraid leapfrog out of the Konica League of Wales relegation nightmare.
Few gave the Saints any chance two weeks ago but new player/manager Ian Clarke never doubted the team’s ability and his confidence was rewarded in dramatic style.
Successive wins over Conwy and Flint set the scene for the Friday night showdown with a point needed to open the safety valve. And when the villagers raced into a 2-0 lead celebration plans were in hand.
But Nomads quickly dispelled any fear relegation bound Briton Ferry or Maesteg Park had they would go down meekly and only the woodwork denied them a heartbreaking last minute winner.
Graham Ellis notched the first in the third minute. Clarke’s free kick was turned back by Jason Weetman and the big defender was left an easy task.
Carlton Miller then missed two chances before he snatched a second. Billy Morris was denied by the outstanding Nomads keeper Phil Collister but the alert Miller pounced on the rebound.
But Nomads responded two minutes from the break when ex-Shrewsbury Town man Nicky Brookman rifled a low drive past Andy Mulliner from 20-yards.
Nomads set up a grandstand finish when fullback Jamie Williams lashed the ball in from 30 yards after Mulliner strayed off his line.
Saints should have gone back in front when Stuart Tulloch miskicked, and then substitute Mike Davies raced clear, only to be denied by Collister.
The high drama was left for the last minute when Nomads forced two corners and Collister joined the attack. A distracted Mulliner lost the ball under pressure from opposite number and the ball squirmed off the bar.
The final whistle brought scenes of celebrations at the Recreation Ground and the Saints can now begin what will have to be a rebuilding job after a season that started so brightly went horribly wrong.
