Saints just fail to hold out

SAINTS conceded two late goals in their Uefa Cup tie in Sweden to lose 2-0 after a battling performance.
The scoreline still leaves them with hope for a result in the return leg at Wrexham, but for more than three-quarters of the game it looked as though they could hold out for a creditable goal-less draw.
The crucial moment arrived on 77 minutes when a cross from Fredrik Gustafson on the right hand side was turned into his own net by Saints' defender Tommy Holmes as he attempted to clear.
Six minutes from time, it was no surprise when Oster's impressive Pär Cederqvist doubled the lead.
Gerard Doherty failed to deal with a cross from Daniel Petersson and the recent signing from First Division Djurgardens was on hand to score.
With a five-man midfield leaving striker Jamie Wood to plough a lone furrow up-front, TNS were unable to pose a serious attacking threat to their Swedish hosts.
In a rare attack, Colin Alcide cut inside and fired a shot over the Oster goal early in the game and Wood just failed to get on the end of a Tommy Holmes' free kick from deep in the TNS half.
Oster had fired an early warning to Saints when Velic rattled the crossbar with a 20-yarder and Gustafson could have done better with a 20th minute header which he sent past the post, after a right wing cross had found him in space.
In a spell of late first-half pressure, Doherty came to Saints' rescue, stopping a point blank effort from Cederqvist when the striker was through on goal.
And Oster could have taken an interval lead, when the same player fizzed his effort past the post.
Second-half chances were few and far between for either side, but just when Saints looked to be holding out, Oster converted their late opportunities to take a more than useful lead into the second leg.
Jimmy Aggrey had an outstanding game in defence for TNS, with Velic running the Oster midfield.
Overall, the containing tactics failed to produce the desired result and Saints will need to be more adventurous in the return to have any chance of overturning the deficit.
