TNS just avoid home melt-down

PORT Talbot officially adopted the nickname Steelmen at the start of the season, but it was TNS who were almost in melt-down at Treflan.
Only a last minute goal prevented their first league defeat of the season against lowly south Wales opponents.
The Saints won the ball after some persistence down the left hand side and John Leah crossed for substitute Michael Wilde to head his ninth Welsh Premier goal of the season past Talbot keeper Neil Thomas.
It was an unlikely outcome to a match that had seen the home side dominate for most of the match with John Toner, John Lawless, Steve Evans and Marc Lloyd-Williams all going close in the first quarter of an hour.
But TNS were reduced to 10 men before the break when central defender Jimmy Aggrey received a yellow card for a tackle on Gareth Phillips and senselessly pushed another opponent while the victim of his tackle was still receiving treatment.
Despite being a man short, TNS still had plenty of the game in the second half without seriously troubling the visitors' keeper.
But, after Evans had one header cleared off the line, Saints were rocked at the other end when the defender upended Carl Shaw in the box, after Robert Cockings had found acres of space on the right to feed the striker.
Shaw picked himself up to send Gerard Doherty the wrong way from the spot kick.
Moments later, Doherty produced a brilliant double save to deny Tony Wallis, who later fired over an empty net after another mix-up in the home defence.
With time running out, it looked all over for Saints, until Wilde popped up to spare their blushes.
