Last-gasp Wilde saves TNS bacon
A LAST-gasp equaliser from Michael Wilde snatched a point from Rhyl to leave TNS still sitting pretty at the top of the Welsh Premier.
Deep into stoppage time, Martin Naylor's long throw from the right found Steve Evans, who forced the ball across goal for Wilde to volley home from close range.
On the balance of play, it was a fair result after Saints had dominated first-half possession with nothing to show for their efforts.
Marc Lloyd-Williams and Steve Evans both had chances, although Chris McGinn forced Jimmy Aggrey to head off the line and sent a dipping 18-yarder just over the bar.
The match sprang into life on the restart, with Chris King playing an immediate role after coming on for Tommy Holmes, but not before Lee Hunt had put the visitors ahead.
Stuart Graves nodded down Marc Limbert's cross for Lee Hunt to volley the Seasiders into the lead but, almost immediately, King replied with a scorching 25-yarder that Paul Smith failed to hold.
The Rhyl stopper did well to tip over a Lloyd-Williams effort, Scott Ruscoe volleyed just over the bar and Smith made a point blank save to stop another TNS attack.
But some sustained Rhyl pressure ended with Hunt pouncing for his second with 10 minutes left after a long ball caught Steve Evans flat-footed.
Rhyl's fans thought they had done enough to win it, but Wilde had other ideas to the relief of his team-mates and the home supporters.
The match was watched by S4C viewers and a league record Treflan crowd of 1,042. |
