TONER'S EURO BOOST
JOHN Toner's profitable Easter kept TNS in sight of European football as neighbours Oswestry Town continue to contemplate a tense relegation battle.
The forward followed up his double strike in Saturday's 3-0 success over Carmarthen with the only goal of the game as Saints put paid to their border rivals 1-0 at Treflan.
Toner's 12th minute goal was enough to separate the sides, the front runner converting after being set up after good work by Nicky Ward from the left byline.
The third-placed hosts continued to carve the better chances with Ward blazing another effort over while Toner was foiled by keeper Danny Embleton on the stroke of half of time.
Oswestry played with plenty of spirit, their best opening of the game coming on 36 minutes when Mick Collins was denied by keeper Gerard Doherty.
But TNS side held firm as the second half drifted into a stalemate.
Ward had gone close to increasing the home lead when he twice struck the woodwork early in the second period.
The front runner was denied by the post on 55 minutes with Embleton beaten and moments later he was again frustrated when his angled lob from the right hit the far upright.
Oswestry refused to surrender, but rarely threatened to find a way back as the encounter fizzled out in the last half hour.
And the afternoon ended on a disappointing note for Town - substitute Jamie Fairhurst, making his come-back, was sent off in the last minute for his second caution.
Fairhurst -> Mackenzie (78)
Bullen -> Collins (46)
