EURO SPOT LOOKS ASSURED
TNS seem virtually assured of European football next season after pushing Rhayader to the brink of relegation from the League of Wales. One goal was enough to separate the sides, the decisive moment coming in first-half stoppage time. The Saints broke upfield from a home attack and. although Matthew Bishop's back-header lacked sufficient pace to pose a threat, Scott Ruscoe nipped in to chip over keeper Carl Mountain. Rhayader, despite looking doomed to the drop into the Cymru Alliance, played with plenty of determination and went close after 11 minutes when Paul Sellers volleyed over after a header from Steve Mardenborough had been blocked. Clear-cut chances were in short supply at both ends, Jodie Jenkins going closest for TNS with a couple of second-half efforts. The midfielder headed over a Robbie Wood cross in one of his team's best openings. Mardenborough went closest to levelling for Rhayader when he blasted a 75th-minute shot over the bar. |
