SAINTS CLINCH EURO PLACE
TNS booked their UEFA Cup spot for next season in emphatic style after roaring into a three-goa! lead inside the first half-hour. Victory, based on a solid all-round team display, guarantees third place in the League of Waies while also keeping hopes alive of finishing runners-up spot. And the Saints never looked back after taking charge with a three-goal blast inside a 10-minute spell in the first half. The first came on 21 minutes when the impressive Steve Anthrobus slid in to convert Derek Ward's right-wing cross. Dave Bridgwater weighed in with a second five minutes later with a 25-yard free-kick and fellow midfielder John Leah then got in on the act on the half-hour when steering home from 16 yards after the home defence had failed to clear. Cwmbran had bright spells at the start of each half with substitute Mattie Davies denied by the post, but the Saints held firm despite a couple of goalmouth scrambles to secure a creditable sixth clean sheet in the last seven outings. And they sealed a convincing victory when substitute Jodie Jenkins, sporting green hair to match his side's colours, converted from ciose range on 72 minutes after Nicky Ward's cross from the right had skidded across the goalmouth. |
