WARD GIVES TNS THE EDGE
CAERSWS launched the defence of the League of Wales Cup with a disappointing 2-0 reverse at Total Network Solutions in their opening group game.
In an encounter of few clear-cut chances at both ends, the Bluebirds failed to make the most of their possession as Saints took the spoils with two second half strikes.
A set piece always looked the most likley means of finding the net and so it proved as substitute Nicky Ward broke the deadlock on 58 minutes.
Just moments after appearing on the field, Ward fired his 20-yard free kick into the left roof of the net after defender Jason Weetman had been adjudged to have handled outside the box.
And the Saints sealed victory eight minutes from time as Chris Edge - one of several changes from the side that defeated Haverfordwest last week - converted a penalty after Steve Anthrobus had been felled in the box.
Caersws, despite their efforts, struggled to unlock the home defence with their attacking intentions often floundering around the box.
Several long range efforts failed to test keeper Dean Williams, with Marc Hughes firing a couple of efforts wide while Andy Davies was also unable to capitalise after finding himself in space on the left.
At the other end, Anthony Wright was guilty of a glaring miss five minutes from half time as he put the ball wide from 10 yards while Anthrobus and Timmy Edwards both sent headers off target before Ward broke the midfield stalemate.
