WRIGHT TREBLE DOES THE TRICK
ANTHONY Wright's well-taken hat-trick kept TNS on course for a quarter-final place in the League of Wales Cup.
The former Droylsden marksman pushed his claims for a regular spot in the starting line up with some cool finishing while denting the Robins' hopes of progressing in the competition.
Both sides, showing several changes from the previous Saturday, opened brightly as they exchanged a string of long range efforts.
But it was TNS who made the breakthrough midway through the first half when Tim Alexander broke along the right and pulled the ball back forWright who steered his low 14-yarder into the net.
Newtown had struggled to find a way through although Steve McCormick brought a good save from keeper Mark Deegan with a rasping angled strike while Steve Rogers put the rebound into the side netting.
Rogers was also denied by a goalline clearance from Tommy Holmes after Deegan had failed to collect under pressure.
But the Saints tightened their grip on the game with Wright netting his second when he curled the ball into the net from the edge of the box after Mark Thomas had lost possession.
At the other end, Rogers saw a volley tipped round the post but the visitors deservedly sealed victory five minutes from time when Wright completed his hat-trick with a neat lob following some slack defending.
Newtown at least finished on a high with Terry Green hitting the post from the edge of the box before they grabbed a last-minute consolation when substitute Justin Wickham crossed from the right for Chris Adamson to fire home from close range.
But it was all too late for the Robins who now must win their remaining two group games if they hope to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.
