Match report FAW PREMIER CUP

JUSTIN Wickham's late strike put Newtown on the verge of a place in the quarter-finals of the FAW Premier Cup with a crucial 2-0 success at Treflan in their penultimate group game.
After both sides had looked out of sorts in front of goal, Wickham broke the deadlock eight minutes from time in stunning fashion as he made a strong run towards the right edge of the box before curling his left foot 20-yarder into the far roof of the net.
And with the hosts pushing for an equaliser, substitute Mark Williams settled the issue when he found space to drill his low shot past keeper Mark Deegan for a second goal that could prove crucial.
With group winners Caersws shattering Aberystwyth's hopes with a 1-0 verdict at Park Avenue, victory now means that Newtown need just one point from their return match with TNS to make sure of their place in the last eight - and a £15,000 bonus.
But they could also progress on goal difference if they avoid a defeat by a three- goal margin after their Llansantffraid rivals were left to reflect on a disappointing display last night.
Clear-cut chances were in short supply for much of the encounter as the two sides seemed to lack ideas in and around the box.
Gareth Watkins and Mark Thomas both fired 25-yarders over the bar for Newtown while at the other end, TNS's best first half moments came from headed efforts by Timmy Edwards.
The Saints looked more purposeful after the break with Gary Powell firing straight at keeper Mark Jones from a golden chance.
Steve Anthrobus headed narrowly wide while late on substitute Tim Alexander forced Jones into a good save when he tipped his 20-yard effort over the bar - but their hopes were shattered by Wickham's solo effort as the relieved Robins halted a five- match losing run.
